Understanding the Difference Between Adding a Source and Connecting a Developer Account in Appbot

It is important to understand the difference between:

  • Adding a source to an Appbot account
  • Connecting an App Store or Google Play developer account

Although these features work together, they serve different purposes within Appbot.

If you want to use Appbot to make app review replies you need to do both – add the source to your account and connect the developer account.

Adding a Source

When you add an app under Manage Sources, Appbot begins tracking the app’s publicly available ratings and reviews from the App Store or Google Play.

This allows Appbot to:

  • Fetch public review data
  • Display ratings and reviews
  • Track sentiment and analytics
  • Include the app in dashboards and reports

Importantly, adding a Source only provides access to publicly available review information.

It does not provide permission to manage the app or reply to reviews.

Anyone can follow an app in Appbot and access its public review data, even if they do not own the app.

Connecting a Developer Account

Connecting a developer account is a separate process that gives Appbot authenticated access to the app store account that owns the app.

This connection is required for actions such as:

Supported developer account connections include:

Unlike Sources, developer account access is controlled directly by Apple and Google.

Appbot can only access the apps that the connected developer account has permission to manage.
